Nokia unveiled recently a new technology for short range wireless connection between mobiles 10 times more efficient than Bluetooth. The new technology is smaller and energy-efficient that it could be used in small devices such watches. Wibree, is the new name of this new technology, can work alongside Bluetooth short-range wireless connections but use just a fraction of the power.

“It’s up to 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth,” Bob Iannucci, head of Nokia Research Center, told a news conference.

Nokia said it had worked for five years to develop the technology and would put it through a standardization process along with a number of other wireless technology firms. When Wibree has become a standard, the technology would be available to anyone at the same reasonable terms. Bluetooth technology was invented by Ericsson in the 1990s and subsequently given away to the market as an open standard.
