Since you are living in Saudi Arabia, i think you are inflenced with the local scholars!

How can they explain the fact that their "witnesses" saw the crescent at the end of chaabane whereas it has been prooved scientifically that it can't be seen!!!

I am OK with you that we must proceed with "ro2ya" to check for the lunar months but we must establish the following rule : if seeing the crescent is impossible by calculus we musn't trust the witnesses!! But if we are supposed to see it and we failed, then we respect the ro2ya!!!!

furthermore, when the prophet was talking about the umma which don"t know to write or read, he must be talking about the majority of arabs at that epoque! NOT the moslem umma! in 1400 years of islamic history we did have the best scientists worldwide and still (faruq Baz, egyptian geologist helped the americans to land on the moon through the appollo project!)

sada9a mo7amed alghazali (ra7imahou allah) when he described the fe9eh of the saudi scholars : "fe9eh badew"

we rabbi yehdi...

@Amine I'm not influenced with anybody :) A simple example, if science prove that you can't see the crescent and you see it with your own eyes ... what does it mean ? You are blind and calculus is correct ? :-)

Science is based on truths, and if you can see the crescent with your eyes, its called a truth. Calculate with computers will always try to approximate and never give the truth. You understand what I'm talking about ?

Last but not least, When Jebril A.S. ordered Mohammad PBUH "Iqra" !, does it mean "Read" ?! The prophet PBUH answered that he don't know reading, but the question wasn't about reading at all. It's not like you now reading this text, Jebril AS didn't show him something written, so "Iqra" mean repeat what I'm going to tell you.

It's true that our prophet was "Ommi", he don't know reading and writing, but he wasn't ignorant. And to be back to the previous hadith, following the Quran and Sunna doesn't mean that we are ignorant or we don't have scientists. It simply mean that we are muslims and follow the word of God.

PS : I don't know about faruq Baz, but we have a scientist in the family who worked in Ariane 2, and she's 100% Tunisan too.

if science prove that you can't see the crescent and you see it with your own eyes
That means that you didn't see the crescent of the moon but sth else that you thought it was the crescent!!!

And that's what occured last Ramadan! Since Ro2ya is done without any scientific background, witnesses saw mercury on the horizon and thought it was the crescent!

Since i am an engineer, i admit that there's always an error margin in all our calculus, but during our studies we knew that even this margin is calculated!!! Nowadays astronomy is a very developed science and we can predict eclipses in 20 years and more with a margin of milliseconds! The margin of error to predict if the crescent can be seen or not is too small to be taken in consideration!

One thousand years ago, a moslem scientist (i forgot his name) predicted many eclipses and knew if they will be partial, total...

In fine, read this verse of sourat yassin and think about it's interpretation :
وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّى عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُونِ الْقَدِيمِ {39}

Amine mercury and the moon are very different, but as you said probably someone can confuse if its the first time. But people used to see the crescent I think are very well experimented to make the difference. That's what I'm talking about, seeing the crescent and not something else.

Another case, if science prove you can see it and that day visibility is totally impossible, it happened many times. Can you see the crescent ? No way !! You have calculate it, estimate it, but didn't see it. So the hadith "صوموا لرؤيته و أفطروا لرؤيته" cannot be validated.

It's a matter of real vision, not supposition hope that you understand the difference ?

What you said is EXACTLY what i said in my first comment!!! please read it again...

What i am trying to say is that witnesses can be wrong whereas modern methods to predict the crescent can't!!! Thanks to God who set exact rules that the moon respects (that's how i understand : taskhir al9amar to us..)

The hadith asks us to try to see the crescent! That's OK!! we must do it and we must fast only when we see it! But if calculus predicts we can't see it, we musn't trust the witnesses! This is the point!
