It’s 8.6 Gigapixel no mistakes, and it seems to be the largest digital photo on the Net ! A composite photo of the “Parete Gaudenziana,” a fresco painted by Gaudenzio Ferrari, dated 1513. This fresco is in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in the convent of Varallo Sesia, diocese of Novara and Province of Vercelli, Italy. The site uses Flash to let you explore the fresco over a zoom range of more than 180 to 1. The photo is made up of 1145 images, each 12.2 Mpixel and 16 bits per color channel. Read on for more technical specs of the photo.

Size of Photographed Scene: 10.80 m x 9.94 m (35.43 ft x 32.61 ft), corresponding to 107.35 m2 (1155.37 ft2). What can I say, just crazy !! The website is very slow, but it’s worth waiting. Via Slashdot.

Today on Hannibal TV there is an “H”, of course if you check the program page you’ll notice that it’s talking about Sa 09/09/06 !! What about today ? If my memory isn’t buggy we are on 28/10/06 !! I know the difficulties to keep a website updated, but this is not a big deal, I think its a minimum that the website of a TV channel display its daily program. It’s great that they have a website anyway, but hope that they’ll find a way to keep it updated. But now can someone tell me where can I find the daily program of Hannibal TV on the net?

Last week I stopped in front of something called Smoked Mussels, I saw it before in supermarkets but that day I wanted to try it. I don’t know why but something told me that its so bad ! It’s ready to eat, smoked with oil and salt, and made in China :-) On the packing its indicated “Easy Open Tin”, well its really very easy and we began !! I grabbed a knife to open it, the tin was broken from the first trial. After about 15 minutes, I finally open it. Well finally it was eatable, but a suggestion if one day you want to try such thing be sure to finish it the same day, because after few days in the fridge it looks more like dates than mussels.

Since two years I’m not sure how many server we tried, but its certainly a lot ! Today the first time we moved to a dedicated hosting, no more hassles about resources or warning to interrupt our service ! The DNS have been updated last night and today I’m already able to work on the new server. Comments have been enabled again and until now I really didn’t notice a big usage of resources, it still under 2% for both Memory and CPU even that I had to rebuild the whole website many times yesterday. I was worrying about website speed, but looks like it is fine too !

I have called our new server HostPHP, there is certainly lot of work to do, especially moving all other accounts from old server. But anyway it looks like until now everything is working great. The server is a P4 2.00GHz 512 KB cache 1Gig RAM but RAM is shared between me and another customer and I have a full 512M :-) Server is provided by RackForce, and I got many positive feedback from their current customers in addition that prices are really interesting compared to all other providers, its also very easy to upgrade without interruption at all !

Eid Mubarak w koll 3ame wentouma 7ayine eb khir !! Since tonight, after isha prayer in Haram loudspeakers in the street started announcing the Eid “Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, Allah Akbar wa lellah el Hamd”. I’m really happy that the eid came, in the same time very sad that ramadhan is over, and nobody knows if we will see another ramadhan or no.

And by the way I wanted to ask something, why people want that all arab countries agree on the same date for the Eid ? First of all our prophet PBUH explained very well the lunar months, eid and ramadhan, and the hadith is very clear : “صوموا لرؤيته و أفطروا لرؤيته”, then the second hadith from sahih muslim and bukhari “( نَحْنُ أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لا نَكْتُبُ ولا نَحْسُبُ ، الشهر هكذا وهكذا ) يعني تسعة وعشرون وثلاث”.

Long time that I didn’t see such rain, yesterday in the afternoon around 2pm a storm started in Holy Makkah. I was in my office, we hesitated between leaving early or waiting till the storm end. Finally it was better if we left more earlier, because few minutes later the roads was totally blocked, and we used to leave the car and finish walking till home. Check out the video :-)

Finally there was no solution than moving to a dedicated server, and until we can find a suitable solution to move the whole website comments have been disabled on the whole network. Below latest usage of the website :

Average CPU%:- 0.88
Average MEM%:- 6.8
Top Process %CPU 57.0 /usr/bin/perl -w mt-comments.cgi
Top Process %CPU 55.0 /usr/bin/perl -w mt-comments.cgi
Top Process %CPU 41.0 /usr/bin/perl -w mt-comments.cgi

======================================

Memory should be below 3%, I don’t know how to monitor this in the current time, so the only solution I found is to disable comments. In the same time I’m taking backup of the whole website, who knows !! Unfortunately everything came always together, we’ll be certainly back with better service in the future. Thanks for your understanding.

I’m not used to create DVDs before, so today I left the DVD creator running and took about 5h30 to finish creating the DVD and burn it !! That’s too much I think ? The only problem that I don’t want to create the DVD only but i want it to fit on 4.7GB disks, now I’m testing to create the DVD without burn it and the time displayed is about 3 hours !! Is not there any fast way to create 4.7GB DVD image from avi, divx or mpeg, then burn it in less than one hour ? Burning maybe depend on the writer speed and so on, but what about the creation process ? I find 3 hours tooo much, especially that I have a lot of movies that I want to watch at home.

Update : The second process just finished its 3 hours for creating the DVD image but took only 5 minutes for burning !!!

I don’t think its the first time I submit similar picture of windows public errors in subway stations or any other public place. It looks like a story of love between Windows and public screens. This one posted by Philipp Lenssen.

Our current hosting account is suffering from lots of problems mainly due to the limitation in resources usage and due to the high traffic that the website is generating. The solution is certainly to move to a dedicated hosting, even that current budgent don’t allow it. The current hosting account cost around $300 per year, but used to host all my website, and the current new alternative began from $1307.88 per year, but in the same time include a 160GB hard drive 1200GB bandwidth per month P4 3.0 Ghz w/ HT 1024MB RAM, and the most important a 100 Mbps port and freedom in resources usage.

Two days ago, my current hosting provider launched an advertising campaign on PHPMagazine.Net via AdBrite, and you’ll probably notice their Interstitial on the network if you visited it. I just enable it to test it as an alternative source of revenue, I’ll try to monitor the revenue from this campaign otherwise I’ll disable it. Anyway it still not enough to cover our hosting fees.

Update : I discovered in the last minutes that (vrtservers.net) the company behind the $1307.88 offer is not recommanded at all, now seriously first offer began from $1527 per year :-( Continue reading Current Server Issues
