Something I was noticing in the PHP community recently that date between two release become more and more shorter. Its somehow going very very fast ! 4 Days only between the 5.1.0 and 5.1.1 ! and the 5.0.5 was released just one month before, the latest 5.1.2 released this month on january 12 …
What I was thinking about is the adoption of PHP5 in production servers, when system admins saw 4 days between two release they will certainly be worried about updating the next stable version. And who knows that its stable ! Was it necessary to release the 5.1.0 ? While it came with new features and not really big security issues.
Certainly we all giving much importance to PHP5 and what it could provide as enterprise solutions for professionals, but there is two things that I was thinking about :
1- Why this forcing concerning the release time of new versions of PHP5
2- And does it help the development of PHP5 ?
I don’t know how to answer the two questions, but I think that Zend is behind the forcing of releasing new versions of PHP. Certainly we all know that Zend have lot of PHP developers who work on the development of PHP and submit patches and bug fixes of the software, also Zend have new obligations today with Zend Core for IBM and Oracle to provide business solutions for their customers.
If it does help the development of PHP5, I’ll say yes but not too much ! The popularity of PHP is due to its easy structure and programming so that anybody can learn it in no time. The adoption of PHP4 was more than great, PHP5 looks to be a transition phase that didn’t yet find its way to the public. Maybe because it become a concurrent to PHP4 and not a compatible as was planned in the beginning, and of course because there is too much release of PHP4 and PHP5 in the same time. I’m not talking about myself but which one may I follow ???
So what you think, is this benefic for PHP or no ?
